RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
